Drawn from the Book Description
"More than anything else in the world, Antonia wants a Mei Mei, a little sister, to call her own..."
And so begins this serenely written and richly illustrated children's book about two sisters, one older, one younger, both born in China, and adopted by the author's family.
What I like about this book is that it's told in the voice of Antonia, the older sister and captures her anticipation before her sister arrives. Antonia shares her deep disappointment in this Mei Mei who doesn't walk or talk and cries and steals attention! Over time, though, these sisters bond closely and deeply to one another.
Ed Young is a Caldecott Medalist and two-time Caldecott Honoree for his illustrations. Using a unique wallpaper collage effect for the pages, My Mei Mei has a very warm, cozy "just like home" feel that every child and every reader will find familiar.
Roberta's Note: I think this has just become my favorite book for siblings - whether your children are from China or anywhere else in the world!
