Rebecca's Journey Home

Rebecca's Journey Home - Vietnamese Adoption Story Book

Rebecca's Journey Home is the 2007 Sydney Taylor Award Winning story of an observant Jewish family adopting a baby girl from Vietnam. Much of the story is told from the viewpoint of the American siblings, Jacob and Gabriel, who see their mother leave for Vietnam, eagerly read her e-mails with photos, and hug their baby sister in welcome. The story follows the family through the baby's arrival, her first Shabbat in her new home, her visit to the mikvah as she is converted to Judaism, and the ongoing celebration of her rich cross-cultural heritage. "She'll be Vietnamese and American and Jewish." So declares the excited older brother. The newest member of the Stein family will be Rebecca in English, Rivka Shoshanah in Hebrew, and Le Tai Hong in Vietnamese. Michelle Shapiro's appealing and bright watercolor illustrations show touches of whimsy and lightheartedness that add to the story. Brynn Olenberg Sugarman writes from personal experience. She is the mother of an adopted Vietnamese child. Reading level: Ages 4-8 Hardcover Book - 32 pages
